A complete guiding to fighting the bugs, dirt and mystery fluids to read your water meter, and determine whether or not you have a leak in your home.
What you need:
- Shovel or tool to pry the cover off
- Rag or something to wipe away bugs (flame throwers work too)

Before we begin: Make sure nothing in the house is using water (Dishwasher, washing machine, showers, etc.)
Step 1. Remove the cover.
Note: If the cover hasn’t been moved in a while, grass and soil can hold it down pretty tight. Your shovel comes in handy as a prying tool.

Voila!

Step 2. Wipe away any dirt/bugs you’re not thrilled about touching.

Step 3. Open the flap (if your meter has one) and write down the number, or snap a quick picture. This one reads 035471591.

Step 4: Wait at least 2 hours, more is better. The longer period of time you test it, the more accurate your reading will be.
Step 5 . Read you numbers again. Our’s are the same! If your numbers are different you can have another beer because now you need to find your leak.

Step 6: Replace your cover. You’re all done!
