2.Setup

Setting up your new SmartMatz™ will take 15-20 minutes, depending on how much you need to trim off of the mat. Be sure to have your supplies ready when you begin in order to make the installation process move faster. It helps to read through the steps before you start, and even download the app so you’re ready to go when your mat arrives.

Installation happens in 3 steps, listed below in sections 2.1-2.4

  1. What You Need (Collect the tools you’ll be using)
  2. Installation (Trim and place your mat)

2.2.Installation

  1. Clear the space under your sink. Remove all items (ie. Trash can, cleaning products, etc).
  2. Measure the length (left to right distance) of the cabinet.
  3. Trim your mat using a utility knife or other small blade knife, do not use a kitchen knife.  Few cabinets are alike in size, so your SmartMatz™ is made to be trimmed to your cabinet size.  In fact, we’ve added convenient trim features to your mat for just this purpose. If you are not confident in safe cutting techniques, please watch this safety video before you begin trimming your mat. The big rule of thumb is to always make sure your knife has a clear path and never place yourself, another person or object in the path.
Your mat can be any length between 34in and 26in.
Only cut along the valleys of the mat, no the peaks. This will ensure your mat holds water securely in the event of a leak.

  4. Place your SmartMatz™ flat on the base of the cabinet.
  5. Create a slope: Some cabinets are not level and water needs to reach the sensor to be detected.   If necessary, use pieces of the cardboard shipping container to level, or slope the mat such that any water build-up is guided to the sensor.  Cut slivers of the shipping container and place them under the mat to create a slope whereby water is guided to the sensor in the middle of the mat.
  6. Insert the leak detector and plug it in.
  7. Connect to the Wi-Fi using your SmartMatz™ App. Follow the steps in the Connect Your Device Video or review section 2.3.
  8. Complete a the device test outlined in Section 4.
  9. Replace the items under your sink. They can sit nicely on top of the mat, and safe from any leaked water in the future.
  10. Forget about it. If there is a problem, we’ll let you know!

Important: Do not stand on your mat. It is strong enough to support household items but not a human.

3.Device Layout

There are 4 lights on your leak detector

  1. Visibility Light- This complementary, white light provides more visibility in your dark cabinet when you’re looking around for products you may store on the mat.
  2. Status Light- This light changes color based on the status of your mat and any moisture or water leaks.
  3. Power Light- This light indicates that you have power and the device is on. You don’t need to pay much attention to it.
  4. WiFi Access- This light indicates you can access WiFi. You don’t need to pay much attention to this light either, but it will help us with troubleshooting if anything is to go awry.

3.1.Status Light Guide

The orange flashing light will only occur before you setup the leak detector to the WiFi.

The flashing green light indicates there are no leaks. Lucky you!
Note: This light will occasionally blink blue.

A yellow flashing light is a warning indication, meaning there is moisture on your mat, and you may have a slow leak or something spilled. Nothing to stress about, but you need to take a peak under the sink and find out what’s going on as soon as you can. Slow leaks turn into big leaks, and all leaks cost you money. You can calculate how much a leak costs you here.

A red flashing light means you have a heavy leak or flooding. Get down there immediately to address the problem and/or shut off the water supply.

4.Testing

Now let’s test it!  This is an important step. We want you to understand how your device behaves in a water event so you will feel confident in your SmartMatz™ and be prepared to take action. It only takes about 1 minute to complete.

Pour some water on the mat.  Does it flow to the sensor?  If not use pieces of the shipping container to elevate the mat (back, left side, right side, or front) so that flows to the sensor.  Once the sensor detects either moisture or flooding it will raise an alert momentarily on your phone.  This proof will demonstrate a working system and the text messages you’ll receive as a result of a moisture leak or worse, *gulp* a flood event.

You can see an example of leak detection on the app in our demo video here.

We recommend testing your mat once every 30 days to ensure it is working properly. We are a new company and appreciate feedback of any kind. You can reference the Status Light Guide in Section 3.1 for guidance on proper device behavior.  If your device appears to have stopped working please contact us immediately.

Note:  Testing should only be done after you’ve created your account, added your device.

5.How does my SmartMatz work?

Your SmartMatz™ main job is to alert you when it senses a leak.

In the event of a leak, the leak detector will sense moisture and/or flooding and send a text message to your phone, and show an alert on the app.  The leak detector can differentiate between a small moisture leak and flooding, and therefore send the appropriate message to you. The app will also specify the status of your mat, see the Leak Demo video or read How Do I Know if I Have a Leak in section  3.2.

5.1.Do I really need an outlet?

Yes, you need an outlet. This smart devices is not battery powered because batteries perish after a few months; you must plug it in to a nearby outlet – usually the garbage disposal/dishwasher outlet is nearby and free.

Yes No

5.2.How do I know if I have a leak?

If a leak occurs, your SmartMatz™ will let you know in a number of ways. You can also look on the Devices hub of your app, there you will see the status of the water drop.

  • The green water drop indicates there are no leaks.
  • The yellow water drop indicates moisture or a slow leak.
  • The red water drop indicates a heavy leak or flooding.

Initially, the SmartMatz™ App will prompt you with a message to ‘Acknowledge’ when a leak occurs. The leak detector will send a text alert to the designated alert contact to warn them of the occurrence. You will receive both of the these notifications when a leak occurs.

5.3.I have a leak! What do I do?

If your SmartMatz™ App indicates you have a leak follow these steps.

Examine the location of the leak. If its heavy, shut off the water supply. If it’s light, you can leave your water supply running if you choose, but remember that your SmartMatz™ can only hold 1 gallon, any more than that and water may spill and subject you to costly damage.

If more than a gallon has leaked and your surfaces are wet, call your insurance adjuster right away to report a claim. If it’s minor, you only need to call a plumber (or handy friend) to fix the problem. Your SmartMatz™ App will have that number ready for you if you provided one at the time of setup.

Once the problem is fixed, make sure to dry your mat thoroughly or it will sense moisture and continue to alert your phone. Small amounts of moisture will evaporate after a short period of time.  But larger puddles should be cleaned out.and place it back under your sink.

Place the mat back under your sink.

5.4.How Do I Clean My Mat?

Consider these tips for Cleaning out Water collected in the SmartMatz

  • Using a wet/dry Shop Vac vacuum to suck up the water.
  • Using a sponge and bucket.
  • Do NOT use a standard household vacuum with a dust bag – this will just gum up and ruin your vacuum and/or bag.
  • Do not ask your dog or cat to lick it up.

5.5.My app isn't working. What do I do?

First, make sure your wifi is running. If you continue to experience app problems please call us at 541-626-6876 or request support here.

5.6.How do I trim my mat to fit my sink?

Its pretty simple. Take a tape measure (or any measuring tool) and measure the length of the area you want to place your SmartMatz™. Using the trim marks along either end of the mat you can cut off any excess length. We recommend using a box cutter. If you don’t have one, surely a neighbor or good friend does. Be sure to cut at the height of the mat, not the base, or you will risk water spilling in the event of a leak; increasing your risk of water damage.

6.Troubleshooting

  1. First, make sure your WiFi is running.
  2. ave you changed it’s location and the WiFi signal strength in the kitchen has dropped.
  3. Has the name or password changed?  – You’ll need to reconfigure your SmartMatz™ Leak Detector if either has changed. See Section 2.3, Step 4.
